Honestly folks, if you're looking for silky smooth, creamy homemade ice cream White Mountain is the product to purchase. The recipes were easy to follow, and their suggestions on how to make it were simple to follow. We looked for an ice cream maker and tried 2 or 3 different brands. But the white Mountain freezer makes the smoothest, creamiest ice cream we've EVER eaten.
We have made home made ice cream for over 40 years. The new White Mountain makers however are not the quality of the old ones from my childhood days. Most of my adult life, we have used cheaper makers just because I couldn't justify spending the extra money. I will say this, the White Mountain system definitely makes richer, creamier ice cream and left overs which keeps much better than cheaper makers.
So much for the idea that paying a little more gets better quality. (Hard to believe I know). Also, when I took the motor apart to examine it, imagine my disppointment when I saw the "Made in China" sticker. Makes great ice cream though. Explains the short life span I guess. As a kid, we had a White Mountain which lasted a long, long time.
One year after we bought ours, the springs which hold the brushes in the motor corroded and snapped because they were made from poor quality materials. Buy the hand crank model - more work I know but the electric motor model is built pretty cheap. Last year we bought a White Mountain because we had a little extra. The dasher seems to mix the ingredients so that they don't seperate afterward like cheaper units.
When it did work, the ice cream was amazing. I can't believe that the manufacturer would allow such cheap parts to be used in a $200 "commercial grade" motor. I'm just glad it's still in warranty. After five uses, one of the parts in the motor broke and now it won't churn. It is less than a month old and has been used to make 5 single quart batches of ice cream.
I actually still use the old unit once a year for tradition sake and have purchased a Cuisinart 2 Quart model with the tub you put inn the freezer. Rival has ruined a good name. The OLD White Mountain must be at least 30 years old and the tub still does not leak.
Wanting to keep it in the family I purchased a NEW White Mountain Freezer with both Hand Crank and Electric. Well, then the tub started to leak as written by others. I was fortunate enough to have an old White Mountain freezer my parents used for many years.
For a couple of times you can soak the tub but then the cheaply made metal bands stretch/rust and the tub simply begins to spread apart. Less ice cream but just as tastey and no salt or ice. I can only repeat what others in this category have written.
First the electric motor burned out after 4 uses and rather than spend the money on a new motor we were just going to use the Hand Crank.
I will definitely not recommend this I/C maker to anyone. The factory says that the noise is normal, but other I/C makers we have owned were not as noisy. This product looks nice, does not leak, and performs as advertised. However, the motor is so loud and noisy, you cannot stay in the same room or area with the unit.
